A Midwife’s Chest of Drawers
Spring 2023
Medium: Cherry, Gouache Paint, Brass
Size: 34”x 45”x18"
A chest of drawers that draws inspiration from the work of Zulma Steele, Edna M. Walker, and Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony. The wild carrots on the front panels represent a common plant that has been used as a contraceptive method prior to the advent of the birth control pill. Not seen in this is a hidden compartment for a midwife to store the tools of their trade, one of the covert components intended to protect resistance from possible suppression in the domestic sphere. The design is meant to celebrate the ways in which women/trans/non-binary people continue legacies of reproductive justice despite the violence patriarchy systems inflicts upon us.
